2017 Maserati Quattroporte Changes
Although the new 2017 Maserati Quattroporte in its segment for its Italian flair, it still trails behind its rivals in terms of technology offered. On the upside, though, some of the highlights for the newest Quattroporte model include user-friendly controls, distinctive styling, spacious cabin and engaging handling. The 2017 Maserati Quattroporte sedan is one of the few luxurious sedans out there that can boast of matching the German-made luxury haulers that have quite a stranglehold on the luxury sedan market segment. The sedan has received an upgrade to make it remain fresh amid the tough competition.
The cabin has been upgraded with the latest technologies and comfort features. The dash has received a bigger, 8.4-inch touch-screen which displays information and controls of the infotainment system. The infotainment system itself has been upgraded to feature Android Auto and Apple CarPlay.
The system also comes with a new Air Quality Sensor which features an intelligent sensor as well as a signal analysis system that determines external air population levels and limits toxic gas and polluted air from gaining access to the cabin. The model also features blue inserts on the ‘trident’ emblem at the front and on the wheel center caps. The GranLusso rides on 20-inch Mercurio wheels and features black calipers while the GranSport features 21-inch Titano wheels and red calipers. The GranSport also comes with an Exterior Carbon Package which features carbon-fiber on door handles, mirror caps, bumper inserts and on the B-pillar cover.
2017 Maserati Quattroporte Engine
The lineup of engines comes unchanged for the 2017 model year. The base engine is a 3.0 L, V-6 which is developed by Ferrari. This engine puts out 404 horses and 406 lb-ft of torque. This engine is equipped on the Quattroporte S. It helps the model run to 60 mph from standstill in 5.1 seconds.
However, Maserati has increased its top speed slightly to 177.7 mph from 177 mph. This is courtesy of improved aerodynamics. The engine is offered in RWD but on the Quattroporte S Q4, the engine is offered in AWD.
The strength of the V8 engine is obvious from the moment you find the mysteriously hidden start button, waking it up with threatening depth and constrained anger. Then you push the Sport button and the exhaust valves open up to give the engine its full voice. Its turbochargers don’t follow the trend to nestle within the hot vee, but they still manage to be properly responsive at every point in the rev range. Unlike most of the big German motors, this V8 is significantly oversquare, which makes it feel like it wants to rev and rev and it always feels like a bit of a surprise when the limiter kicks in and the auto changes to the next cog.
The second engine is a turbocharged diesel. The engine is a 3.0 L, V-6 which is capable of 271 hp and 443 lb-ft of torque. This is the least potent and slowest of the Quattroporte models reaching 60 mph from standstill in 6.4 seconds. Its top speed has also increased slightly from 155.3 mph to 156.5 mph.
The car again comes with a choice of two gas engines, neither of which has been touched as part of this update. The S and all-wheel-drive S Q4 Models use a 3.0-liter twin-turbocharged V6 that makes 404 horsepower and 406 pound-feet of torque. Interestingly, an updated, 424-hp version of this engine that launched in the Levante crossover doesn’t make it to the big sedan. The QP’s other engine is the GTS model’s twin-turbo 3.8-liter V8, which puts out 523 hp and 524 lb-ft. The V8 is only paired with rear-wheel drive because adding a front driveshaft would be a packaging nightmare that’s not worth the small number of added sales. Both engines are hooked to ZF’s ubiquitous eight-speed automatic transmission, which works cleanly and efficiently.
The absence of a front diff explains why the V8 only claims a two-tenths advantage over the S Q4 to 60 mph, hitting the mark in 4.6 seconds. Given that the rear-drive S does the run in 4.9 seconds, you have to figure a hypothetical all-wheel-drive V8 could knock that down to 4.4.
The most potent engine is placed on the range-topping Quattroporte GTS. The unit motivating this model is a 3.8 L, twin-turbo V-8 engine. This engine is also crafted by Ferrari. The engine is offered in RWD. It powers the model to rush to 60 mph in 4.7 seconds and achieves a top speed of 192.6 mph from the previous 190.7 mph.
